Peris Wakesho: Regional Director
Born and brought up in the coastal town of Mombasa in Kenya, where not many young girls went past primary school, Peris knew from a young age that she had to change that. By being a role model to the other girls and youth in her home town, she grew her desire to make positive impact in other’s lives.
In the search to achieve this, she informally taught neighborhood children while in primary school, joined the St. Johns Ambulance as a volunteer first aider at the age of 12 and the Family Health Options Kenya (formerly Family Planning Association of Kenya), volunteered as a youth educator and grown to who she is today. Before joining Ashoka, Peris participated in a 9-month fellowship program working with an Ashoka fellow in Minna, Nigeria as a Young Champion for Maternal Health. With a team of other young people, she founded a Public Benefit Organization (Asilia Africa) focused on improving reproductive health services access to marginalized and vulnerable women so as to address maternal mortality and morbidity. She is also the founder and CEO of First Consultants, a fir, which offers psychology and security related services.
Vincent Odhiambo: Youth Years Director
Vincent is the founder of Informed Mashinani, a youth serving social enterprise working with young people to solidify their role in areas of leadership, policy influencing and socioeconomic development. Some of the sectors he has worked in include education where he developed a leadership and life skills program for beneficiaries of a scholarship program he was managing and in social service where he led the development of a model exit plan for children in charitable children institutions.
In a bid to test a community policing model with emphasis on mutual camaraderie between the youth and policemen, he brought together the two groups in Kilimani Division through a number of community work initiatives to redress the balance of power between these two groups. This helped create a relationship that would eventually see the two groups positively engage in trying out various innovative ways of making the division secure. Vincent often shares his thoughts on a wide range of issues particularly touching on the youth and social development.
